Introduction
The Major League Baseball Authentication Program has set the standard for
sports memorabilia authentication. Major League Baseball has teamed with the
personal services firm Deloitte and Touche and is the first and only
professional sports league to implement a progam that easily distinguishes
authenticated autographs and game-used memorabilia from other items on the
market.
This program - which combines the services of an independent third-party
authenticator with a state-of-the-art hologram, a serial numbering system and
an online verification process - guarantees Major League Baseball fans that the
items they acquire are 100% authentic.
Authentication
Every autographed and game-used item in the MLB Authentication Program is
authenticated by a Major Leaue Baseball representative. An independent third
party authenticator from Deloitte and Touche as a representative of Major
League Baseball will attend all approved autograph signings and will witness
the removal of all game-used items to be offered by Major League Baseball® as
part of the program.
Posting on MLB.com
Each item and its unique indentification number is processed and posted on the
official program Web site - MLB.com - for easy reference by consumers. Soon
collectors will be able to register their authenticated items online for proof
of possession.
Assignment of unique id number
Once witnessed, every item will be affixed with one of two tamper-proof
holograms (shown left) created by OpSec, U.S. to identify its Major League
Baseball authenticity. A round hologram will be applied to baseballs, and a
larger tunnel-shaped hologram will be applied to all other items.
