Larry Bird is a Boston sports icon that led the Celtics to three NBA Finals championships during his Hall of Fame basketball career. While playing his entire career for the Boston Celtics, Bird reached an insurmountable number of feats and earned designations as a two-time NBA Finals MVP, a three-time NBA League MVP, and 12-time NBA All-Star selection. Following his retirement from the game, Bird became the head coach of the Indiana Pacers from 1997-2000 and is currently the Pacers’ President of Basketball Operations with an award for Executive of the Year for 2012 to his name.

After completing a storied college basketball career at Indiana State University, in which he led the Sycamores to their first NCAA tournament appearance in school history, Larry Bird was selected sixth overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1978 NBA Draft. From the second he joined the Celtics, Bird made Boston a title contender, leading the team for a first place finish in the Eastern Conference and winning the 1980 NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

For the 1980-1981 NBA season, the Boston Celtics acquired forward Kevin McHale and center Robert Parish to create a Hall of Fame trio that would win the 1981 NBA Championship and dominate the league for years to come. At the conclusion of the six-game series, the Celtics took home the title and Bird fell just short of the MVP Award after averaging 21.9 points, 14 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 2.3 steals per game.

Constantly improving his already extraordinary game, Larry Bird averages 24.2 points, 10.1 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.8 steals per game throughout the 1984-1984 season and was named league MVP for the first time.  Reaching the 1984 NBA Finals for a match-up against long-time rival Magic Johnson and his threatening Los Angeles Lakers, Bird led the Celtics to a comeback win for his second championship and first NBA Finals MVP award. Although Bird continued to dominate the competition to take home his second NBA Most Valuable Player award, the Celtics fell short of defending their crown in a loss to the Lakers.

Acquiring Bill Walton at the start of the 1985-1986 NBA season, the Boston Celtics set themselves up for another run at the title and topped the league with 67 victories. Winning the Three-Point Shootout at the 1986 NBA All-Star Weekend and posting an average of 25.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists, and 2 steals per game throughout the season, it was another epic year for Larry Bird as well and he became the third player in basketball history to win three consecutive NBA MVP titles. In a commanding postseason run, dropping only one game, Boston took home another championship and Larry Bird was named 1986 NBA Finals MVP.

The storied Larry Bird is only person in NBA history to be named League MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of The Year. Commonly referred to as ‘Larry Legend’, Bird played all thirteen seasons of his professional career for the Boston Celtics, which eventually led to his famous #33 bring retired and immortalized by the franchise.
