Nolan Ryan was one of the greatest pitchers in MLB history and was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 on his first time eligible for election. Better known as “The Ryan Express,” Nolan Ryan dominated Major League Baseball for a record 27 years while pitching for the New York Mets, California Angels, Houston Astros and Texas Rangers.
Ryan’s career started with the Mets after they drafted him out of high school in the 12th round of the 1965 MLB Draft. He made his professional debut during the 1966 season, making him the second youngest player in the league at the time – but played sparingly. Ryan missed the majority of the following season due to injuries, and it wasn’t until the 1968 season that he finally began to impact the majors. The Mets used Ryan as a reliever for most of the 1969 season, and the team went on to win the World Series against the Baltimore Orioles. New York traded Ryan to the California Angels before the 1972 season in what remains as one of the worst trades in franchise history.
His first season with the Angels served as Ryan’s coming out party. He led the American League with 329 strikeouts and established himself as a force to be reckoned with. Ryan posted three-consecutive winning records in his first three seasons as an Angel, but the team suffered from low run support and was never true playoff contenders. The 1973 season was one of the many peaks of Ryan’s career; he threw two no-hitters during the season and eventually recorded a 21-16 record. Ryan led the AL in strikeouts seven times during his eight seasons as an Angel, but struggled with walks and the team eventually decided to part ways.
Ryan joined the Houston Astros before the 1980 season in the hopes of finally leading a team to the World Series. This was another season of accolades and highlights for Ryan, who joined the 3,000 strikeout club in a July game against the Cincinnati Reds. Ryan almost accomplished his goal of being the best pitcher on a World Series team during that 1980 season, but the Astros were eliminated from the playoffs one win shy of making it to the title series. History was made during the 1981 season when Ryan threw his fifth no-hitter and broke Sandy Koufax’s record mark for most career no-hitters. Ryan’s ERA that season was a National League best 1.69, which earned him a place in MLB history as he also became just the third pitcher to throw a no-hitter from across both leagues.
Ryan pitched for the Texas Rangers from 1989 to 1993, achieving the rare feat of playing in the span of four decades (1966-1993). He retired as an eight-time All-Star, 11-time strikeout champion and a World Series champion. Ryan also set the benchmark for strikeouts with a career-best 5,714, and his seven no-hitters are also the most all time.
