Matt Carpenter is a multitalented standout player for the St Louis Cardinals. After a 13th round selection in the 2009 MLB Draft out of Texas Christian University, Carpenter spent his first year in the minors with average stats. Since his MLB debut, Carpenter has played a strong position at both second and third base proving his place on the roster and helping lead his team to a World Series appearance.
Carpenter was initially a stand out at high school where he won various awards including being voted into All-State teams and honored as an All-American. At Texas Christian University he had average stats that were impressive for a freshman, but injury soon plagued the infielder. By the time he reached the draft, he had little room for negotiation. He was selected by the Cardinals in the 13th round and spent his first season being sent to a number of teams in the Minor League. He finished the season with an overall batting average of .283 as well as 22 RBI’s and 2 home runs and would have a long way to go until the Majors.
Over the next couple of seasons, Carpenter continued to rise up the leagues, voted the Minor League player of the year in 2010. In 2011 he was called up to the Majors but underperformed, only playing a handful of games and remained absent on their post-season roster.
In 2012 Carpenter saw an upturn in his fortunes after Pujols and Punto left the organization leaving Carpenter with the chance to shine. By 2013, Carpenter had been moved from third base to second base and became the leadoff hitter, which was an inspired move that led to him his first All-Star call up. He led the league in hits, doubles, runs, and was in the top 10 for batting average, on base percentage, bases, and singles. He was eventually awarded a Silver Slugger award for 2013.
